Danna Powers
My name is Danna Powers; I am 66 years young. I graduated from Morehead State
University in 1975 with a BA in English and Literature, from MSU in 1977 with a
MA in English, and from Murray State in 2000 with a certification in ESL. I
taught English and journalism for 36 years at Boyd County High School until my
retirement where I have experienced all levels of students from freshmen to
seniors. Since 2000, I have also taught college level courses
(ENG 101 and 102) to the seniors and occasionally on the ACTC campus.
I was married to my husband and best friend, John, for 36 years. He passed to sing in the heavenly choir on March 28, 2016. We were gifted with two children, Joshua Daniel and Ruth Elisabeth (Betsy). My husband and I were active for decades at our church, Oakland Avenue Baptist Church, where he and I worked the sound board and computer for most services. I also played the piano for the children’s departments in Sunday School and was the Children’s Choir Director. I am now a member at Old Orchard Christian Church where I play the keyboard for the praise team and help my daughter in her ministry.
My son, Josh, 38, is a graduate of Georgetown College and the Gardner-Webb University School of Divinity. He is the pastor at First Baptist Church, Biscoe, NC. He is blessed to be married to Brandi for the last ten years. She is also a graduate Gardner-Webb School of Divinity; she is teaching first grade at Tillery Charter Academy. God has blessed them and us with our first grandson,Joel Aiden, on September 4, 2011, and our very first granddaughter, Belle, on December 31, 2016.
My daughter, Betsy, 36, is a graduate of Georgetown College and Gardner-Webb University School of Divinity. She is a hospice chaplain with Community Hospice and the children's minister at Old Orchard Christian Church. She is married to Steven Cole and has one son, Joseph (JoJo), who was born on October 2, 2011.
I gave my life to the Lord when I was eight. He has never failed me; I can always depend on Him—“God will make a way when there seems to be no
way!”
Why do I teach? God has called me to teach and He has not told me to retire yet!
